SCRANTON, Pa. - Sophomore guard Bridgette Mann (Canadensis, Pa./Wallenpaupack) scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor to earn team MVP honors, as the third-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team rolled past visiting Wilkes, 81-37, on Sunday evening in the final game of the 2016 Cross-County Challenge.
With the win, the Lady Royals remained perfect on the young season, going to 5-0 overall. Wilkes, meanwhile, dropped to 2-4 with the loss.
In the victory, Scranton never trailed (and the game was never tied), as the Lady Royals opened up a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter (19-7) after ending the period on a 13-2 run.
From there, Scranton continued to put constant pressure on Wilkes, extending the lead out to 29 points at the break, 41-12. In the second quarter alone, Scranton outscored Wilkes, 22-5, marking the second straight night the Lady Royals had a big second period (they outscored King's last night, 27-8).
The rest of the contest saw Scranton continue to pad their lead, eventually taking the game by 44 points, which marked the 55th victory for the Lady Royals all-time in their series with Wilkes (in 57 games).
Overall, Mann led the way on the night, nailing a trio of three-pointers in her 17-point outing. The sophomore also dished out three assists and two steals in the victory, as well.
Elsewhere, senior forward Alexix Roman (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) ended the game with 14 points (on 6-of-8 shooting) and six rebounds, while freshman guard Mackenzie Yori (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) chipped in with 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Lady Royals.
Senior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) finished with five points, but had seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal to round out the top performers for Scranton.
Once again, the Lady Royals registered a strong defensive night, as they held Wilkes to single-digit point outputs in the first two quarters of play. In all, Scranton held Wilkes to just 27.6 percent shooting from the floor in the victory, as the Lady Colonels did not have a player reach double-digits in the scoring column for the game.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday night, traveling to Neumann for a non-conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
