EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The University of Scranton rallied from three different deficits, including a five-point hole with two matches left, to defeat East Stroudsburg, 19-18, on Wednesday night.
The win extends the best start in program history as the Royals improved to 9-0 in dual match competition this season. But it did not come easily.
East Stroudsburg (1-2) gave up a forfeit to start the match, but won the next three weight classes to take a 10-6 lead. Then Scranton senior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) pulled the Royals even with a 10-1 major decision victory at 157 pounds, his 13th win of the season and 103rd of his career.
The teams then traded decisions to remain tied at 13, with Royals junior Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) winning 8-4 at 174 pounds to square the match. But the Warriors responded with a technical fall at 185 pounds to take a five-point lead with just two matches remaining.
Scranton freshman Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) did his part by winning an 8-2 decision at 197 pounds. Then senior Salvatore Montuori (Clarks, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) gave the Royals the dramatic win with a dominant 7-1 decision at 285 pounds.
Connelly's win was his 11th of the season while Montuori picked up his 10th.
The Royals will wrap up the first half of their schedule on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take part in the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
