GLENSIDE, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team used a fast start and a streak of seven straight goals to roll to an 11-2 victory over Arcadia on Wednesday evening at Easton Field.
The Royals (10-3) scored three times in the opening six minutes, then scored seven straight goals from late in the first period until midway through the fourth to take total control of the game. The win gives them double-digit victories for the third straight season.
Senior midfielder Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) had three goals and fellow senior midfielder Nick Mullery (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) finished with two goals and three assists to lead Scranton.
Mullery scored the opening goal of the game just 1:57 in, then assisted on the next two as Scranton took a 3-0 lead less than six minutes in. After Arcadia (2-9) got on the board at the 4:24 mark of the first period, Mullery scored again just 13 seconds before the first horn. Mikrut then opened the second period with three straight goals to spark the decisive 7-0 run.
Scranton also got two goals and two assists from freshman attackman Matt Haemmerle (Hillsdale, N.J./Bergen Catholic), two goals from junior attackman Jake Haimson (Montville, N.J./Montville) and a goal each from senior midfielder Nicholas Swift (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and junior defender Mattias Jones (Exton, Pa./Malvern Prep). Senior midfielder Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) also had two assists and junior midfielder John Sheridan (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) added one.
The Royals held a 45-20 edge in shots and were successful on 10 of 11 clear attempts. They also forced 16 turnovers while committing 14 and won 12 of the 17 face-offs.
Senior goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) made five saves while allowing just one goal over the first three periods. Sophomore Jeff Sabatini (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) came on and made three fourth-period saves.
Mullery had a team-high two caused turnovers while Haimson and sophomore defender Sean Adelhelm (Mendham, N.J./Mendham) had two ground balls each. Sophomore midfielder Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won 12 of 15 face-offs.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday when they host Merchant Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference game beginning at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
