The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team could not overcome a slow start offensively, costing them on a snowy April afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field in a 5-3 loss to Susquehanna.
The game, which was dominated by steady, sometimes heavy snow, was slow to get going, at least offensively. The first period was scoreless and it remained that way until Susquehanna (8-4, 2-1 Landmark) scored 3:58 before halftime.
The Crusaders carried that 1-0 lead into halftime, then added three straight goals for a 4-0 lead midway through the third period. But Scranton (9-3, 2-1 Landmark) fought back, scoring three straight times to pull within 4-3 with 10 minutes left. But Susquehanna added a goal and clamped down defensively to close the door.
Senior attackman Andrew Marone (Morristown, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) scored twice for Scranton, both assisted by senior midfielder Nick Mullery (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson). Sophomore midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) added a goal.
Senior goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) made 10 saves in the loss, his fourth straight game with double-digit saves and sixth of the season. He also had a team-high eight ground balls.
Susquehanna held a 36-22 advantage in shots and was successful on all 15 of its clear attempts. Scranton finished with a 30-28 edge in ground balls and had 14 turnovers, one more than the Crusaders.
Scranton will be back in action on Wednesday, April 13, when the Royals travel to Glenside, Pa. to take on Arcadia at 7 p.m.
