ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team never found its offensive rhythm on Wednesday afternoon, scoring just once in each period in an 11-4 loss to top-seeded Elizabethtown in a Landmark Conference semifinal at Wolf Field.
The Royals (11-6) were tied with the Blue Jays (12-5) at 1 after a period and trailed just 3-2 midway through the second. But Elizabethtown scored twice late in the first half, including the second goal with only a second remaining, then scored four straight goals in the fourth quarter to turn a 7-4 game into an 11-4 victory.
Scranton received goals from senior midfielder Nick Mullery (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson), junior attackman Jake Haimson (Montville, N.J./Montville) and sophomore attackman Matt Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris). Sophomore midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) and freshman attackman Matt Haemmerle (Hillsdale, N.J./Hillsdale) added assists.
The Royals were outshot, 44-24, but senior goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) made 13 saves, including 12 in the first three periods to give the team a chance to rally. He finishes his career with 427 saves, tied for fourth-most in school history, and his 6.89 goals-against average is the lowest in Scranton history.
Sophomore midfielder Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won 11 of 16 faceoffs and had a team-high five ground balls.
Scranton's season ends at 11 victories, the third straight with at least 10 wins and the most by the team since the Royals went 12-5 in 2008. The Royals were also making their sixth straight postseason appearance and the eighth in nine seasons in the Landmark Conference.
