MOOSIC, Pa. – On a brilliant September afternoon worthy of a postcard, The University of Scranton women's golf team played its first match in school history, and the Royals made it one to remember.
Scranton stormed to a 5-0 victory over Wilkes in match play format at Glenmaura National Golf Club, closing out all five matches by the 12th hole. All five players got off to strong starts and never looked back all afternoon, making an historic day in Scranton athletics even sweeter.
It started with junior Katie Allen (New Milford, Conn./Immaculate High School) knocking the first shot in school history down the middle on the first hole, continued with junior Julie Cranney (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) making the first birdie in University of Scranton women's golf history on the second hole, and continued from there.

Allen and freshman Brianna Stein (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) led the way with victories in the first foursome, and Cranney and sophomore Maggie McDonough (Dunmore, Pa./Holy Cross) also took the two matches in the second group. Sophomore Maura McDonough (Dunmore, Pa./Holy Cross) completed the sweep with a win in the final group, finishing off what head coach Ed Karpovich called "quite a day."
The Royals will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25, when they host Wilkes, Arcadia and Marywood at Scranton Municipal Golf Course in Mount Cobb, Pa.
