YORK, Pa. -- Senior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) capped a standout career with The University of Scranton wrestling team by finishing fifth at the NCAA East Regional on Sunday at York College.
Evans entered the day in the semifinals at 157 pounds where he was the no. 2 seed, but was upset Rocco Russo of Oswego State, 8-2, to fall into the consolation bracket. There, he lost a 13-2 major decision to Hunter Neely of Washington & Jefferson before rebounding to take fifth place with a 5-1 decision over top-seeded Jeff Hojnacki of Messiah.
Evans finishes his career with 122 career victories, the second most in the wrestling program's 49-year history. He completed his senior season with a 32-5 record, tying his career high for victories in a season, which is tied for fifth most in school history.
Five other Royals were in action in the consolation bracket to start the day – senior Salvatore Montuori (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) at 285, junior Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) at 174, sophomore Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) at 184, and freshmen Nicholas Ciaccia (Freehold, N.J./Howell) at 133 and Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) at 197.
Montuori capped his career by going 29-11 on the season, a career high for victories and tied for eighth-most in a single season in program history.
Connelly finished the season with 25 victories in his freshman campaign, tied for 13th-most in a single season in Scranton history. D'Apolito also set a career high with 22 victories this season.
The Royals finished the event in 14th place with 32.5 points. Messiah ran away with the team title with 141 points, easily outdistancing second-place Baldwin Wallace's 98.5 points.
