WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton wrestling team faced some stiff competition on Sunday at the Wilkes University Duals in the Marts Center and came away with a 1-2 record on the day.
The Royals (15-3) opened the event with a 26-12 loss to Wilkes (17-4) before bouncing back for a 33-11 win over West Virginia Tech (3-8). But the Royals fell behind early in their last match of the day and ultimately lost, 27-20, to Rochester Institute of Technology (8-6).
The win over West Virginia Tech was the team's 15th of the season, extending its single-season school record. In that victory, Scranton received pins from freshman Nicholas Ciaccia (Freehold, N.J./Howell) at 141 pounds, sophomore Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) at 184 pounds, and senior Salvatore Montuori (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) at 285.
The Royals also picked up decisions from senior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) at 157, junior Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) at 174 and freshman Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) at 197. Evans' victory was the 118th of his career, moving him within seven of tying the program's all-time career record.
In the loss to Wilkes, Montuori picked up a pin at 285 while D'Apolito (174) and Connelly (174) had victories by decision. Against RIT, Connelly had a pin at 197 to cap a 3-0 day, and Montuori also had a 3-0 day after a decision at 285. D'Agostini picked up a pin at 184 and sophomore Kevin Merle (Stroudsburg, Pa./Belvidere) won by decision at 165.
Montuori is now 25-9 on the season with nine pins, and Connelly is 23-9 with four pins.
The Royals will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they travel to Brockport, N.Y. to take on 15th-ranked Brockport State at noon in their final event before the NCAA Regionals on Feb. 25-26.
