BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior midfielders Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) and Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had big games to boost The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team past Moravian, 11-6, in a Landmark Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Carey finished with a team-high three goals and added an assist, and Drury won 17 of 21 faceoffs to help the Royals (6-4, 2-1 Landmark) dominate possession in the win. Junior attackman Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) added two goals and an assist as the Royals moved into third place alone in the Landmark Conference.
Moravian (4-5, 0-3 Landmark) scored the opening two goals, but Scranton answered with four straight to take a 4-2 lead early in the second period. The teams traded a goal each before the break as the Royals led, 5-3, at halftime.
The Royals then seized control with the first three goals of the second half for an 8-3 lead. Moravian answered with two straight, but Carey scored late in the third period and the Royals outscored the Greyhounds, 2-1, in the final period.
Scranton also received a goal and an assist from senior midfielder William Joyce (Bethesda, Md./St. John's), freshman attackman Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence) and freshman midfielder Joe Hill (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side). Senior defenseman Patrick Sawyer (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) scored his first career goal, and sophomore attackman Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and freshman midfielder Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) also had goals. Freshman midfielder Peter Roche (Chester, N.J./Mendham) also had an assist in the win.
The Royals held a 42-21 edge in shots and 44-24 in ground balls. Carey had a team-high six ground balls, and Drury and junior midfielder Brendan McLaughlin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had five each. Freshman defenseman Alex Dadourian (Summit, N.J./Summit) also had a team-high two caused turnovers.
The Royals will be back in action on Thursday, April 13, when they host Elizabethtown in a Landmark Conference game at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
