MADISON, N.J. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team took a big step toward securing a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs by defeating Drew, 10-6, on Wednesday night at Ranger Stadium.

The victory improves the Royals to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in Landmark Conference play. The Royals have one Landmark Conference game remaining on Saturday, April 21, against Susquehanna at Fitzpatrick Field. The Royals can secure a playoff spot with a win in that game. Even with a loss, the Royals have a good chance to advance to the postseason based on other results over the final week and a half of the regular season.

Scranton raced out to a 6-2 lead at halftime and 9-3 after three periods before the Rangers narrowed the gap in the fourth period. Sophomore attackman Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) led the Royals with three goals, giving him 42 for the season, two shy of matching the Royals' single-season mark of 44.

Junior attackman Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had two goals and an assist, and senior midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) finished with three assists. Sophomore attackman Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence) added a goal and two assists.

Scranton also received one goal each from senior attackman Matt Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris), senior midfielder Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade), sophomore midfielder Alexander Dadourian (Summit, N.J./Summit) and freshman midfielder Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan).

Senior goalkeeper Jeff Sabatini (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) finished with 10 saves between the pipes, matching his season high while improving to 9-3 this season.

Carey led the defense in front of Sabatini with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Adam Maiale (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) had four ground balls and a caused turnover, and Killeen also finished with four ground balls.

Scranton had a 33-28 edge in shots, aided by a dominant 16-3 edge in the third period. The Royals also had a 31-24 advantage in ground balls and completed 14 of 15 clear attempts. They committed just 15 turnovers and went 1-for-5 on the power play.

Drew (3-10, 0-4 Landmark) committed 21 turnovers and completed 13 of 22 clear attempts. The Rangers were 1-for-6 in man-up situations. Each team won 10 of the 20 faceoffs.

The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, April 21, when they host Susquehanna at 1 p.m. on Senior Day at Fitzpatrick Field.
