Men's Lacrosse Suffers 13-7 Defeat To Susquehanna In Landmark Semifinal

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A game of runs went in the wrong direction at the end for The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team in a 13-7 loss to Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference semifinal on Wednesday afternoon.

The fourth-seeded Royals (10-7) trailed 4-0 early in the second period, then ran off six straight goals to build a 6-4 lead two minutes into the second half. But top-seeded Susquehanna (12-6) responded with eight straight goals of its own to pull away to advance to Saturday's championship game.

Junior attackman Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the Royals' attack with three goals and an assist, and senior attackman Matt Carfaro (Long Beach, N.Y./West Morris) had two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) and sophomore attackman Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence) added goals and sophomore midfielder Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) had an assist.

The Royals were outshot, 38-30, and won just seven of 23 faceoffs. They continued their strong play in the midfielder by completing 18 of 21 clear attempts. Scranton also went 1-for-2 in man-up situations and committed 21 turnovers.

Junior midfielder Adam Maiale (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) and senior midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) led the Royals with three caused turnovers each. Maiale had a team-high four ground balls, one more than both Carey and Carfaro.

Susquehanna held a commanding 47-23 edge in ground balls and went 20-for-27 in clear attempts. The River Hawks were 2-for-2 on the power play and also committed 21 turnovers.

Scranton's season comes to an end after the Royals made their eighth straight Landmark Conference playoff appearance. They finished with double-digits in wins for the fourth time in the past five seasons.
