Jeremiah Oakes

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - In his first collegiate event, freshman Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) made a name for himself on Saturday at the Brockport Open for The University of Scranton wrestling team, as he captured the 165-pound title at the event.

In all, the Royals put together a solid performance in their season opener, as four other Royals finished second in their respective weight classes, while three more Royals placed third.

On the day, Oakes won his first two bouts at 165 by pinfall, which led to a semifinal in which Scranton took three of the four, as Oakes was joined by sophomore Justin Weimer (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South), and senior T.J. Conlon (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch).

In the semi's, Oakes won by decision over Weimer, while Conlon captured his semifinal bout by major decision (17-5) to move into the finals. In an all-Scranton final at 165, Oakes knocked off Conlon to take the championship in the weight class, winning the bout by pinfall at 4:29.

Elsewhere on the afternoon in Brockport, junior Kyle Shaffer (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) put together a second-place finish at 157, winning three times before falling in the finals to Zack Brown from Brockport, 7-3. Freshman Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), meanwhile, was the runner-up at 149 pounds, as he won three bouts by pinfall before dropping a tough championship match by a 10-8 margin to Austin Sergeant of Brockport.

Collecting third-place finishes on the afternoon for the Royals included junior William Laughlin (Landale, Pa./North Penn) at 174, who dropped his second bout, then battled back through the consolation bracket, winning three matches to go all the way to the third-place match. There, he bested his opponent by decision, 4-2, to take third.

At 184, sophomore Aidan McNally (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) won back-to-back matches before falling in the semifinals in the winner's bracket. After advancing to the third-place match via an injury by his opponent, McNally bested Brian Mascaro of SUNY Sullivan by pinfall at 6:11 to take third in his weight class.
