SCRANTON -- Visiting and 10th-ranked Moravian knocked off The University of Scranton softball team in a pair of Landmark Conference games on Wednesday at Magis Field. The Greyhounds captured game one, 5-1, then won the nightcap, 8-1.
With the losses, Scranton dropped to 8-2 overall and in the Landmark, while Moravian remained unbeaten at 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the Landmark with the DH sweep.
In game one, offense was a premium for most of the game.
Moravian was first to strike, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first to go up, 2-0, on Scranton right away.
It took until the fourth inning for the Royals to finally crack the scoreboard, and they did so on an RBI single by sophomore Isabella Gorzkowski (Pittston, Pa./Scranton Prep) that knocked home graduate student Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) to slice the Greyhound lead to 2-1.
But, with the bases loaded and just one out after the RBI hit, Scranton hit into an inning-ending double play. This proved to the final time the Royals would threaten the rest of the game, as Moravian put the Royals away with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Overall in game one, Gorzkowski went 2-for-3 with the RBI, while senior Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) was also 2-for-3. In the circle, Sweeney took the look (5-1), her first of the year, allowing five runs on 11 hits. Moravian's Alexandria Scheeler (5-0) was the victor for the Greyhounds, tossing a complete game, allowing one run on eight hits.
In game two, offense was even harder to come by for the Royals, as they struggled to get much of anything going against Moravian starter Madison Hummel.
After holding serve for three innings, Moravian broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a home run, then scored runs in the final three innings of play to take an insurmountable 8-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. There, Sweeney hit a solo homer, (her third home run of the year), but it was too little, too late, as Moravian rolled to a seven-run win in game two.
Overall, Sweeney went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored on the home run to lead Scranton in the defeat. In the circle, senior Meghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) took the defeat, while Hummel (5-0) tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits.
The University of Scranton softball team will look to bounce back on Saturday, as they host Susquehanna on Senior Day. The Landmark Conference doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at Magis Field.
