WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior goalie Shayne Fallon (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) kept The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team in the game all afternoon, making a career-high 27 saves, but it wasn't enough as Catholic pulled out a 15-10 win over the Royals on Saturday in Landmark Conference action.
With the defeat, the Royals end their 2021 regular season with a 4-2 overall and Landmark Conference ledger. Catholic improved to 5-0 overall and in the Landmark with the win.
To open, the game was about as even as it could be in the first quarter, as a goal by junior Mike Bouhall (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) with 6:23 left in the opening frame made it a 3-3 game. That score held into the second, where Catholic took control, outsourcing Scranton, 3-1, to take a 6-4 lead into intermission.
The third quarter saw Catholic continue to keep Scranton at bay, as a 4-2 run by the Cardinals gave them a 10-6 lead entering the fourth. There, the Royals came out on fire, scoring three unanswered goals to open the final period, slicing the Catholic lead down to 10-9 in the process.
But, this was the closest Scranton came to the Cardinals' lead the rest of the way, as Catholic scored three straight to open an insurmountable 13-9 lead with 3:31 left. Scranton stopped the scoring run with a goal with 1:14 left, but the Cardinals added a pair of goals in the final minute to take the game by five.
On the offensive end in the defeat, Bouhall had a big game, scoring four goals, his second-highest total in a game in his career at Scranton.
Six other players scored one goal, each, for Scranton to round out the scoring sheet: seniors Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J/Bridgewater-Raritan) (who also had an assist) and Danny Mallay (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side), juniors Cole Lukasiewicz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), Finn Duignan (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Steve Apicella (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland), and freshman Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset).
In ground balls, senior Collin Purdy (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) matched a game-high with six, while in net, Fallon was outstanding all day long with his 27-save performance. The effort was also one of the highest in program history, putting it a tie for third all-time for most saves in a game, and the highest save total in a Royals match since a 29-save performance for Dan Dougherty vs. Cabrini in 2000.
The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team will now await their seeding for the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs, which begin with quarterfinal action next weekend. Check with athletics.scranton.edu for information as it becomes available.
