Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Scranton softball team (5-4) put together an impressive day at The Spring Games on Tuesday as the Royals recorded victories over Wisconsin-Lutheran and Carthage.
Scranton notched a 6-3 victory over Wisconsin-Lutheran (5-3) and closed out the day with a 4-3 victory over Carthage (2-3).
Scranton 6, Wisconsin-Lutheran 3
The Royals took the lead for good with a four-run second inning and never looked back in the 6-3 win over the Warriors.
After Wisconsin-Lutheran had taken a 1-0 lead in the first, graduate student Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) evened things at one with a solo shot in the afore-mentioned four-run second inning and junior Jenna Davida (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) added a two-run double later in the frame for a 4-1 lead at the time. Scranton would add solo runs in each of the next two innings as sophomore Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe) plated a run with an RBI double in the third and junior Alyssa Segnello (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) knocked in a run with an RBI single in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Warriors cut the lead to 6-2 with a solo home run from Lexi Martin in the fifth inning and plated a run in the seventh, but freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) held off the rally to preserve the win for the Royals.
Tirollo improved to 3-1 on the season with the complete game effort as she allowed three runs on three hits while fanning three.
Davida (2-3, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, R) and Segnello (2-3, RBI) both registered multi-hit games for head coach Caitlyn Seamster's squad.
Scranton 4, Carthage 3
Sweeney's grand slam in the top of the fourth erased a 3-0 deficit and gave the Royals a lead they would not relinquish in the 4-3 victory over the Firebirds.
Carthage plated a run in the first and added two more in the third on a two-run shot from Donna Stevens to take the 3-0 lead momentarily. Then, Scranton loaded the bases with a single, walk and fielder's choice to set the stage for Sweeney's grand slam.
The Wind Gap, Pa., native also got the job done in the circle as she surrendered the three runs on five hits to go along with two walks and a season-high eight strikeouts in seven innings. Sweeney's eight strikeouts are tied for the second highest total of her career and her most since fanning 12 in a win over Penn State-Hazleton on Apr. 22, 2019.
Bailey Mentzer was dealt the loss for Carthage after giving up the four runs on two hits while walking two and fanning three in her 7.0 IP.
The University of Scranton softball team is right back in action tomorrow with a pair of contests against William Paterson (2 p.m.) and Coe (4:15 p.m.).
