Freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) tossed five innings of one-hit ball and senior catcher Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead The University of Scranton softball team to a 2-1 win in the opening game of their 2022 season against Ithaca on Saturday at Magis Field.
Ithaca came back to take the second game, 6-3, to split the doubleheader.
Pirollo made her collegiate debut a successful won by working around seven walks while striking out four, including the side in her fifth and final inning. The only hit she allowed came in the second inning, as she threw 3 1/3 hitless innings the rest of the way.
Alich had RBI singles in the first and third innings to plate both runs for the Royals. Her looping liner to right scored junior center fielder Alyssa Segnello (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) in the first innings. And her single to right in the third drove in junior third baseman Jenna Davida (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North).
Sophomore Courtney Wellet (Glen Gardner, N.J./Vorhees) gave up a hit, two walks and struck out a pair over the final two innings to earn the save. She got a little help from her defense in the sixth inning when Segnello tracked down a deep fly ball for the final out with two runners on.
The victory made a winner out of head coach Caitlyn Seamster in her debut as the skipper of the Royals.
In the second game, Ithaca scored four times in the second inning and added single runs in the third and fifth to build a 6-0 lead. Scranton answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Alich and a two-run triple by sophomore first baseman Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe, Twp./Monroe). But the Royals got no closer the rest of the way.
Alich, Stepnowski and senior second baseman Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had two hits each in the loss.
Wellet was solid in relief in game two, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one over 5 1/3 innings.
The softball team will be back in action on Sunday at Magis Field when the Royals host NYU beginning at 1 p.m.
