Box Score 2 SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (15-6) notched a pair of extra innings victories to sweep a doubleheader from the Misericordia Cougars (11-6) in non-conference action on an unseasonably cold Sunday afternoon at Magis Field in Scranton.
The Royals took game one by a score of 8-5 in 10 innings and captured a 2-1 decision in eight innings in the nightcap.
Despite the games being played at Magis Field, Scranton served as the visiting team in both games on Sunday.
Game One
The Royals plated four in the top of the 10th en route to the 8-5 victory in game one.
That came on the heels of the Royals erasing a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh to send the game to extras.
In the four-run 10th inning, senior Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) drove home the go-ahead run with an RBI fielder's choice, a sac fly to right field from sophomore Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe) brought home two more and graduate student Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) followed with an RBI double to make it an 8-4 game.
Sweeney earned the win in the circle as she allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits to go along with a walk and six strikeouts in eight innings of relief.
Erin McGee was tagged with the loss for Misericordia as she gave up the four runs on two hits and walked two in the 10th inning.
The Cougars' Alexa McHugh had a perfect game through six and held a 3-0 lead, but Scranton battled back in the seventh as junior Jenna Davida (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) broke up the perfect game with a double to right field to start the inning. Indelicato drove home Davida with a single, advanced to second on Stepnowski's single and both runners scored on Sweeney's game-tying two-run double into the right centerfield gap.
Each team then plated a run in the ninth inning to knot things at four.
Misericordia had taken the lead earlier in the game with a run in the first inning and two in the third.
Sweeney (2-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) led the way offensively for the Royals, while Indelicato and Stepnowski drove in two runs apiece.
Game Two
Indelicato was placed on second to begin the top of the eighth as part of the international tiebreaker rule, advanced to third on a Stepnowski single and scored on a double play ball to give the Royals the 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the home half of the inning, junior Alyssa Segnello (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) robbed Kaitlin Redling with an over-the-shoulder grab in left field for the first out and Sweeney got a fielder's choice and a strikeout to preserve the victory.
Segnello's grab came an inning after fellow junior Lauren Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Scranton Prep) took a hit away from Misericordia's Nicole Elliott with a running grab in centerfield to send the game to extras.
Sweeney fanned one and got the final five outs to register the win for Scranton, while Emily Wenner allowed an unearned run on two hits over three innings of work and took the loss for the Cougars.
The Royals got on the board first with a run in the top of the second as senior Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) led off with a single, advanced to second on a Segnello single, took third on a fielder's choice and scored on sophomore Jessica Stadler's (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) RBI single. McHugh evened things at one for Misericordia with a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) got the start in the circle for the Royals and surrendered just the one run on three hits while walking four and fanning three in 6 1/3 IP.
Stadler (2-3, 2B, RBI) had a multi-hit game to pace head coach Caitlyn Seamster's team in the nightcap.
The University of Scranton softball team will host SUNY New Paltz in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon with first pitch of game one at Magis Field slated for 4 p.m.
