Box Score 2 SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (21-10) once again used a pair of strong pitching performances and some timely hitting to sweep a doubleheader from the King's College Monarchs (18-9) in non-conference action on Monday at Magis Field in Scranton.
The Royals took one game by a score of 7-1 and finished the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
Scranton has now won six straight and has allowed just four runs during that stretch.
Graduate student Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) drove in three runs on the day and matched the program's all-time RBI record of 149 that had previously been set by Annie Zeleniak (2008-11).
Game One
Head coach Caitlyn Seamster's team scored five runs over the first three innings and cruised to the 7-1 victory in game one.
In the home half of the first, senior Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single and later scored on Sweeney's sac fly. An inning later, a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with two away before fellow senior Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) cleared the bases with a three-run double for a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe Twp, N.J./Monroe) led off the third inning with a triple and scored on junior Lauren Cawley's (Duryea, Pa./Scranton Prep) sac fly to extend the advantage to 5-0.
In the circle for the Royals, Sweeney surrendered just one run on four hits and fanned three in a complete game effort to notch her 10th win of the season.
Scranton added solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings on an RBI single from sophomore Jessica Stadler (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) and an RBI double from Sweeney to take a 7-0 lead for the time being. King's plated their lone run of game one in the top of the seventh.
Brandi McIntosh gave up seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits to go along with five walks and three strikeouts in 7.0 IP and was dealt the loss for the Monarchs.
Stadler (2-3, RBI, R), Sweeney (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI) and freshman Alyssa Mosconi (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) who was 2-3 with a run scored all registered multi-hit games for the Royals.
Game Two
The Royals got on the board with a four-run third inning and held off a late King's rally for the 5-2 victory in game two of Monday's twin bill.
In the afore-mentioned four-run third inning, Stadler and Alich both came through with RBI doubles, while Sweeney added an RBI single to tie the program record with the 149th RBI of her career. Indelicato singled to lead off the fifth inning and scored from first on junior Jenna Davida's (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) RBI double for a 5-0 lead.
King's plated a run apiece in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to get any closer than 5-2.
Freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) gave up one run on four hits while walking four and fanning two over 5 2/3 IP to notch the win for the Royals. Sweeney came on in relief of Tirollo and got the final five outs to record her first save.
Emily Novicki surrendered five runs on seven hits over six innings of work and took the loss for King's.
Alich (2-3, 2B, RBI, R) added a multi-hit game in the nightcap for Scranton.
The Royals return to action on Friday with a key Landmark Conference doubleheader at Moravian. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m.
