Sweeney Breaks Program's All-Time RBI Record as Softball Splits Doubleheader with Moravian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Graduate student Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) became the program's all-time leader in RBI and The University of Scranton softball team (22-11, 6-4 Landmark) split a key Landmark Conference doubleheader with the Moravian Greyhounds (24-4, 8-2 Landmark) on Friday at Blue & Grey Softball Field in Bethlehem.

The Royals took game one by a score of 7-2 before Moravian won game two 10-2.

Scranton currently sits third in the Landmark Conference standings with two regular season games remaining and has qualified for the upcoming conference tournament that will begin on Friday, May 6 at a site to be determined.

The Greyhounds (No. 3) and Royals (No. 4) were both regionally ranked in the latest set of NCAA Region V rankings that were released earlier this week.

Game One

The Royals broke a one all tie with two runs in the fifth and scored four more in the sixth en route to the 7-2 victory in game one on Friday.

Senior Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) reached with a one-out single in the fifth and scored from first on Sweeney's RBI double to give Scranton a 2-1 lead. Sweeney later came around to score on junior Lauren Cawley's (Duryea, Pa./Scranton Prep) RBI single for the 3-1 advantage.

The RBI double plated the 150th run of Sweeney's career, surpassing the previous program record of 149 that had been held by Annie Zeleniak (2008-11).

In the top of the sixth inning, the first three batters all reached for the visitors which led to four unearned runs as Moravian committed two errors later in the frame. Sophomore Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe Twp, N.J./Monroe) drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single that stretched the lead to 7-1 at the time.

Sweeney got the win in the circle for the Royals to improve to 11-5 on the year as she allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits in a complete game effort.

Moravian's Madison Hummel surrendered seven runs (three earned) on 15 hits in seven innings of work and took the loss.

Five different players registered multi-hit games in the game one win for head coach Caitlyn Seamster's team led by three hits apiece from Alich and junior Alyssa Segnello (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive). Stepnowski and Sweeney both drove in two runs apiece in the victory.

Game Two

After a two-run blast from Sweeney in the top of the first opened up an early 2-0 lead for the Royals, the Greyhounds scored 10 unanswered over the next five innings including six runs in the second and three more in the third for the eventual 10-2 win.

Madi Cunningham hit a two-run shot of her own to give the Greyhounds the lead for good in the six-run second and Ajala Elmore added a two-run single later in the frame for a 6-2 lead at the time.

Freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) allowed five runs on three hits to go along with one walk over 1 1/3 IP and was dealt the loss for the Royals. Cunningham gave up two runs on seven hits over five innings and got the win for Moravian.

Junior Jenna Davida (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) was 2-3 in the nightcap for the Royals.

The University of Scranton softball team will host Juniata in a Landmark doubleheader to close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with first pitch of game one slated for 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor the five senior members of the 2022 team.
