Box Score 2 SCRANTON, Pa. – Junior Lauren Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Scranton Prep) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two and The University of Scranton softball team (13-6) swept a doubleheader from the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen (13-6) on Tuesday night at Magis Field in Scranton.
The Royals took both games by a score of 4-3 with the game two victory coming in extra innings.
Game One
Sophomore Jessica Stadler (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) delivered a go-ahead RBI single as part of a four-run fifth inning and Scranton held on for the 4-3 victory in game one.
LVC led 1-0 after four and a half innings before an error in the bottom half brought home the tying run and Stadler followed with the go-ahead hit. Later in the inning, a pair of hit by pitches with the bases loaded plated two more runs for a 4-1 Scranton lead after five.
The Dutchmen battled back with two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3 and had the tying run at third with two outs in the seventh, but freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) got Morgan Comfort to fly to right to end the game.
Tirollo allowed two hits and fanned three over a pair of scoreless innings to notch her first save of the season. Sophomore Courtney Wellet (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) got the start in the circle for the Royals and earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits over five plus innings of work.
Jordan Walter surrendered four unearned runs on two hits to go along with a walk and three strikeouts over 4 2/3 IP and took the loss for LVC.
Game Two
Cawley's walk-off single capped off a four-run eighth inning and Scranton completed the sweep with the 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The Royals' rally in the inning began with a walk to put two runners on and graduate student Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) knocked in a pair with a two-run double to cut the lead to 3-2. Following Sweeney's double, senior Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) and junior Alyssa Segnello (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) came through with consecutive singles as the latter scored Sweeney to tie the game and an intentional walk set the stage for Cawley's heroics.
LVC had taken a 3-0 lead in the top half of the eighth as pinch-hitter Jordan Hess delivered a two-run double in the frame.
Sweeney got the win in the circle for the Royals as she gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and fanned one in three innings.
Alicia Gotts was dealt the loss for the Dutchmen after allowing four runs (three earned) while walking four and fanning one over seven plus innings.
The game was scoreless through seven as Tirollo scattered just three hits in five shutout frames.
Alich (3-3, R) led the way offensively for Scranton in the nightcap as she matched her career-high with three hits, while Stadler added two hits of her own.
The University of Scranton softball team is back in action on Sunday at Misericordia with first pitch of the non-conference twinbill slated for 1 p.m.
