Softball Drops Landmark Doubleheader to Moravian

SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (12-16, 4-4 Landmark) dropped a pair of contests to the Moravian University Greyhounds (24-7, 7-1 Landmark) in conference action on Saturday afternoon at Magis Field in Scranton.

Moravian won game one by a score of 9-0 in five innings and then captured a 12-7 decision in game two.

Moravian 9, Scranton 0 (F/5)

Holly Walter homered on the second pitch of the game and the Greyhounds scored three runs in the first en route to the 9-0 victory.

Sage Snyder added a solo shot of her own later in the inning and Moravian tacked on two more runs in the third for an early 5-0 lead.

Freshman Carley Noble (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) was dealt the loss for the Royals as she gave up five runs on seven hits in two plus innings of work.

For Moravian, Madi Cunningham scattered three hits and struck out two in five innings.

The Greyhounds then tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning as a pair of errors allowed two of the runs to score which opened up a 9-0 advantage.

Freshman Kelsey Boyhen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and junior Alyssa Segnello (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) both doubled in the contest for Scranton.

Moravian 12, Scranton 7

The Royals battled back from an early 10-2 deficit and drew within three at 10-7, but were unable to get any closer in the 12-7 setback.

Moravian grabbed an early lead with six runs in the second including a two-run blast from Marcie Silberman and Segnello delivered a home run of her own in the bottom of the inning that cut the lead to 6-1.

Junior Courtney Wellet (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) got the start in the circle for Scranton and surrendered six runs on seven hits over 1 2/3 IP.

Sarah DeStephano gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits and fanned one over 3 1/3 IP in a no-decision for the Greyhounds. Madison Hummel came on in relief and got the win after giving up a run on two hits in 1 2/3 IP.

The two teams traded solo runs in the third as junior Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe) knocked in a run with an RBI double, but the Greyhounds added three more runs in the fourth for a 10-2 lead for the time being.

Scranton battled back with five runs in the home half of the fourth to cut the lead to 10-7 as sophomore Hannah Keane (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) came through with an RBI triple, Stepnowski delivered a two-run blast, senior Jenna Davida (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) plated a run with an RBI groundout and juniorJessica Stadler (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) followed with an RBI single.

However, Moravian answered with two runs in the home half to open up a 12-7 advantage.

Davida (2-4, RBI, R), Stepnowski (2-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R) and freshman Emmie Feltenberger (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) who added two hits and a run scored all recorded multi-hit games for the Royals.

In relief, Keane allowed just one earned run on two hits and struck out one in 3 1/3 IP.

The Royals are right back in action tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader at York (Pa.) with first pitch of game one slated for 2 p.m.
