Bellach Breaks Program Record in 400 IM as Scranton Men's Swimming Finishes Third at Gettysburg Invitational

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's swimming team put together a deep and competitive two-day effort at the Gettysburg Invitational this weekend, collecting numerous top-eight finishes, strong relay results, and a historic individual performance that highlighted the program's continued momentum.

The Royals finished third of six teams with 542.5 points on the weekend. Host Gettysburg College won the invitational with a score of 1032.

Scranton opened the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, as Jake Brunetti, Zach Leonard, Matt Sherry, and Owen Sherry combined for a 1:25.56. The Royals' B-relay also placed inside the top 12, setting the tone for the group's depth across the weekend.

In early individual action, Jimmy O'Malley and Will Tagliareni led the distance corps in the 500 freestyle, finishing 10th (4:49.61) and 11th (4:50.66), while Conor Doogan and Adrian Agnello added more scoring swims for Scranton. The Royals followed with one of their strongest events: the 200 IM. Brunetti placed fourth in 1:57.40, Matt Bellach took sixth in 1:57.99, and both Steven Detwiler and Samuel Peters added top-12 finishes to bolster the team total.

The sprint group contributed more depth in the 50 freestyle, with Owen Sherry (21.65), Leonard (22.09), and Matt Sherry (22.13) posting tightly packed times. Scranton also earned a top-eight showing in the 400 medley relay to cap a solid opening night.

Saturday featured the defining moment of the invitational for the Royals, as Bellach delivered a historic swim in the 400 IM. His time of 4:09.80 not only earned a runner-up finish but also broke the Scranton school record in the event—a mark that had stood since 2007. Detwiler followed immediately behind in third place with a 4:22.90, while Doogan and Christopher Clarke produced additional top-10 finishes.

Scranton continued adding depth with several season-best swims in the 100 freestyle from Doogan (49.70), KJ Smith (51.48), Caden Faulk (51.62), and George Gill (52.00), before closing out the invitational with another strong relay performance on Saturday evening.

Across two days, the Royals showcased their balance from sprint to distance, their depth across all strokes, and the strength of a roster capable of producing both relay consistency and record-breaking swims.

Up Next: Scranton will compete at Wilkes University on January 10 at 1:00 p.m.
