Men's Basketball's Second Half Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Wilkes, 71-58

WILKES BARRE, PA -- The University of men's basketball was defeated 71-58 by Wilkes University in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday night. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: Wilkes - 71, Scranton - 58
  • Records: Wilkes (15-5, 9-4 LC), Scranton (10-10, 5-8 LC)
How it Happened
  • Freshman Sammy Tornabene scored the first four points of the game as Scranton held a 6-4 lead at the 15:41 mark.
  • Wilkes responded with an 18-0 run to take a 22-8 lead with 8:06 remaining in the opening half. 
  • The Colonels continued to grow their lead in the late stages of the first half and led Scranton by 20 points at the break. 
  • Senior Will McLoughlin converted an and-one to complete a 7-0 run for the Royals to open up the second half and cut the lead to 13.  
  • At the 15 minute mark, junior Jon Spatola and McLouglin hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to single digits, 44-35. 
  • Spatola hit another three two minutes later to cut the Colonels' lead to six. 
  • Wilkes regained a nine point lead at the 8:36 mark but McLoughlin answered with a three for Scranton. 
  • Graduate student Tahaj Parland connected from deep to bring the Royals within four at the 3:42 mark, 58-54.
  • The Colonels closed out the game on a 13-4 run to defeat Scranton 71-58. 
Top Performers
  • Spatola led Scranton with a season-high 21 points and nine rebounds. The junior captain went 3-4 from three point-range.
  • McLoughlin added 19 points and seven boards.

  • Scranton held Wilkes to 15.8% from three-point range.
  • Wilkes scored 18 points from the free-throw line.
