No. 3 Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to No. 23 Wisconsin-Stout in NCAA Quarterfinals, 81-77

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton women's basketball team dropped a hard fought battle to The University of Wisconsin-Stout in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday night at the John Long Center. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: No. 23 Wisconsin-Stout - 81, No. 3 Scranton - 77
  • Records: No. 23 Wisconsin-Stout (23-7), No. 3 Scranton (29-2)
  • The Lady Royals finish a historic season that featured the program's 10th consecutive Landmark Conference Championship.
  • This marks the eighth time in program history that Scranton has recorded 29 or more wins. 
How it Happened
  • Sophomore Meghan Lamanna opened up the game with back-to-back threes to fire up the crowd and give the Lady Royals an early 6-0 advantage. 
  • Following a pair of buckets from Stout, Lamanna hit her third three of the game to give Scranton a 9-4 lead with 6:15 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Junior Jenna Sloan hit a floating jumper as the shot clock was expiring to put the Lady Royals up 13-5 at the 4:29 mark. 
  • Lamanna added three more threes late in the first quarter to complete an 18 point opening period as Scranton led 22-20.
  • The Blue Devils hit a triple to take a 25-24 lead early in the second period, but graduate student Maddie Hartnett responded with a three of her own to put Scranton up two. 
  • The two sides continued to exchange baskets throughout the second quarter until Stout took a five point lead at the 2:47 mark, 36-31.
  • The Blue Devils held a six point lead at halftime, 43-37.
  • Stout connected from deep to start the second half and take a nine point lead, but junior Kaci Kranson brought Scranton back within six less than a minute later as she drilled a three of her own.
  • Lamanna hit her seventh triple of the game at the 7:10 mark in the third period to close the gap to 48-46.
  • With 5:33 remaining in the third, Lamanna struck again from deep to give Scranton its first lead of the second half, 53-52.
  • A lay up from junior Kaeli Romanowski put the Lady Royals up five at the 4:26 mark in the third. 
  • Scranton held the lead until the 2:30 mark in the third when Stout tied the game up at 61-61. 
  • The Blue Devils closed out the third quarter with a three point lead, 68-65.
  • Hartnett and Romanowski scored consecutive lay ups to begin the fourth quarter and give Scranton a one point advantage.
  • Stout answered with a 5-0 run to regain a four point lead. 
  • Kranson tied the game up at 77-77 with 2:02 remaining as she scored a bucket in the paint following a steal on the defensive end from Hartnett.
  • A couple of turnovers proved costly down the stretch for the Lady Royals as Stout closed out the game with a bucket in the paint and a pair of free throws to secure an 81-77 win.
Top Performers
  • Lamanna matched her career-high with 24 points and tied the single-game program record with eight three-pointers. Her eight threes also marked the most by a Lady Royal in an NCAA Tournament game. 
  • Kranson dropped a team-high 25 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
  • Romanowski recorded 13 points, five boards, and four assists.
  • Hartnett added nine points, five rebounds and six assists.
  • Graduate student Kyra Quigley matched her season-high with five blocks while grabbing nine rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • Scranton won the battle on the boards, 29-26.
  • The Lady Royals shot 66.7% from three led by Lamanna (8-10).
  • Raegen Sorensen led Stout with a game-high 33 points.
