Scranton Baseball Sweeps Saturday Double-Header with Catholic

The University of Scranton baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Catholic University on Saturday at Volpe Field in Scranton, rallying for six runs in the ninth inning in a 10-9 walk-off win in the opener before securing an 11-5 victory in game two.

Game One
  • Win: Ryan Malone (1-0); Loss: Jake Kenney (1-2) 
How it Happened
  • Catholic jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Matt Perlin lined a one-out single, and Sammy Burman followed with a two-run home run over the wall in right center to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage. 
  • The Cardinals added two more runs in the second, scoring on an RBI single and a sacrifice bunt to extend the lead to 4-0. 
  • In the fifth, Catholic pushed across three additional runs to make it 7-0. After a leadoff hit by pitch, a double to right center brought in a run. Later in the inning, a bases-loaded double play produced another run, and an RBI single capped the frame for Catholic. 
  • Scranton answered in the bottom of the fifth. Jimmy Lundari worked a leadoff walk, and two batters later Conor Campbell ripped a double to score Lundari and put the Royals on the board. 
  • Catholic added runs in the sixth and seventh on RBI doubles, stretching the lead to 9-1. 
  • The Royals loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, and Joey Granko delivered a two-out single to right to score Logan Mason and Campbell. John Heitzman followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Scranton's third run of the inning and cut the deficit to 9-4. 
  • Scranton erupted for six runs in the ninth to complete the walk-off victory. Brayden Keller reached base, and Logan Mason singled him home to make it 9-5. Heitzman drove in another run, and Jack Portman came off the bench with two outs to deliver an RBI single that trimmed the deficit to 9-7. Jared Cassella was hit by a pitch and Aidan Casey drew a walk to load the bases for Tyler Yoo's first at bat of the game, and the freshman worked a walk to force in a run and make it 9-8. Keller was then hit by a pitch to tie the game, setting the stage for Campbell, who lined a single into left field to score the winning run. The RBI was the 100th of his career as the Royals defeated the Cardinals, 10-9. 

Game Two 

How it Happened
  • Catholic scored three runs in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of walks issued by Scranton starter Matt Holgado. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases with no outs to open the frame, and Catholic brought home runs on a sacrifice fly, a wild pitch, and a groundout to take a 3-0 lead. 
  • Scranton answered in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to grab its first lead of the game. Evan Laub came home on a ball off the bat of Jared Cassella that was misplayed by the Cardinals' second baseman, and a wild pitch brought in the second run of the inning. Vincent Napolitano then drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 3-3. Brayden Keller followed by reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Joey Granko and put the Royals in front by a run. 
  • The Royals added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Aidan Casey walked, moved to second on an error during a pickoff attempt, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3. 
  • Scranton extended its lead in the fifth with three more runs. Granko scored on a throwing error by the catcher, Casey doubled down the line to bring home Keller, and Roman Valvano singled in Casey to push the advantage to 8-3. 
  • Catholic cut into the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run double, trimming the deficit to 8-5. 
  • The Royals scored again in the eighth when Heitzman crossed the plate on a passed ball. They added two more runs later in the inning on an RBI single by Napolitano and an RBI groundout from Prince, stretching the lead to 11-5. 
  • Logan Mason took over in the ninth and delivered a scoreless inning with two strikeouts to secure the 11-5 victory and complete the doubleheader sweep.
