HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey
team scored three times in the final 6:34, including the game-tying
goal with no time left in regulation, but eventually lost in
overtime, 5-4, to Juniata College on Sunday afternoon at Goodman
Field.
The loss drops the Royals to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Landmark
Conference play. Scranton is the third seed for the upcoming
Landmark Conference playoffs and is scheduled to play at
second-seeded Drew University on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. The
game is subject to change do to the severe weather on the East
Coast.
Scranton trailed 4-1 with less than seven minutes left before
senior midfielder Corinne O'Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) scored on an assist from junior midfielder
Jessica Conroy (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy
Academy) at the 63:26 mark.
The Royals pulled within one at the 67:52 mark when junior
forward Caitlin Liberatore (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph
Academy) scored an unassisted goal.
Scranton kept the pressure on an earned a penalty corner as time
expired in regulation. Freshman Alyssa Whitman punched home the
rebound of a saved shot with zeros on the clock to force overtime
and set off a celebration on the Royals bench.
But Juniata (9-9, 3-3 Landmark) stopped a pair of Scranton
scoring chances early in overtime, then won it on the third goal of
the game by senior midfielder Caroline Phillips (Wilmington,
Del./Concord) with 54 seconds left in overtime.
Scranton also received a goal in the 34th minute by senior
forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South). It was her 15th goal of the season, the
eighth-most in a single season in Scranton history.
The goal for Whitman was her ninth while O'Kane scored her
fourth and Liberatore tallied her third. The assist for Conroy was
her second.
Juniata outshot the Royals, 27-11, and had an 18-12 advantage in
penalty corners. Sophomore goalie Krista
Mundy (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made eight
saves for Scranton.
The winner of the Scranton-Drew semifinal on Wednesday will
advance to the championship against the winner of No. 1 Catholic
vs. No. 4 Susquehanna on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Catholic. That game
is also subject to change due to the weather conditions. The
championship match is scheduled for Saturday at the site of the
highest remaining seed at a time to be determined.
