Freshman forward Alyssa
Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) continued her
strong play with a pair of goals as The University of Scranton
field hockey team posted its sixth straight victory, a 4-0 win over
Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick
Field.
The Royals also received goals from senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) and junior midfielder Jessica Conroy (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy
Academy) in the win.
The six-game winning streak is the Scranton's longest
since 2006. It also pushed the Royals (8-3) to 3-0 in Landmark
Conference play, their first 3-0 start in conference play since
2006 when they were members of the Freedom Conference. The victory
was also Scranton's first over Susquehanna since 2007.
Scranton jumped ahead early when Whitman knocked home a shot at
the left post on a perfect feed from senior midfielder Corinne O'Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) at the 9:47 mark of the first half.
The Royals took that lead into halftime, then dodged a bullet
early in the second half when Susquehanna (3-9, 1-3 Landmark)
couldn't convert a penalty stroke that would have tied the
score. Scranton took advantage, scoring twice in the span of 1:58
shortly thereafter. Kempf tallied her 10th goal of the season of a
feed from sophomore forward Kathleen Keale (Wall, N.J./Wall), and Whitman
scored her second goal of the game when she knocked home a rebound
of a saved shot.
Conroy completed the scoring with just under 10 minutes to play
when she knocked in a shot during a scramble in front of the
cage.
For Whitman, her two goals give her eight on the season, all in
the last five games. It was her third two-goal game of the season
and moves her within two goals of Kempf for the team lead. Kempf,
meanwhile, scored her 36th career goal, fifth in school history,
and now has 86 career points, fourth in school history.
Sophomore goalie Krista
Mundy (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made four
saves for her second shutout and fourth victory of the season.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they
visit Oneonta State for a non-conference match at 4:30 p.m.
