WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Scranton field hockey
team scored early, but couldn't find the back of the cage the
rest of the way in its Landmark Conference semifinal match against
Drew University, falling to the Rangers, 2-1 in overtime, on
Saturday morning at Catholic University.
The loss ends Scranton's season at 11-7 and marks the
second straight year the Royals fell to Drew in a Landmark
Conference semifinal.
Scranton struck quickly on a goal at the 6:50 mark by junior
midfielder Jessica Conroy (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy
Academy) on an assist by senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South). The goal was the fourth of the season for
Conroy.
Drew (12-6) pulled even less than three minutes before the half
on a goal by junior forward Brooke Gagliano (Freehold,
N.J./Freehold Township). After neither team scored in the second
half, the Rangers won it on Gagliano's second goal 3:09 into
the overtime period.
The teams each had 10 shots in the match while Scranton held a
10-9 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore goalie Krista
Mundy (West Essex, N.J./North Caldwell) made eight
saves for the Royals, including six in the second half.
For Scranton, Kempf picked up her eighth assist of the season,
one shy of tying the single-season school record, set in 2006 by
Karolyn Holody. Kempf finishes her career with 41 goals,
fourth-most in school history, and 18 assists, second-most in
school history and one shy of tying the record set by Traci
Zarbatany in 1986-89. Kempf's 100 career points are also the
fourth-most in school history.
The Royals posted their second straight season of 10-or-more
victories and have gone 23-13 over the past two seasons.
