Giving up a goal less than three minutes into the game
didn't stop The University of Scranton men's soccer
team from building on its season-opening victory on Friday night.
The Royals rallied for a pair of goals and shut down McDaniel the
rest of the way for a 2-1 victory at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday
afternoon in the Royals/Monarch Classic.
The Royals got goals from senior forward Matthew Salvatore (Howell, N.J./Howell) and
senior midfielder Patrick M. Daley (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas
Institute), and junior defender Stephen
Kilty (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) had two
assists as Scranton improved to 2-0 for the fourth time in the past
five seasons.
After McDaniel (1-1) struck 2:27 into the game on an unassisted
goal by sophomore defender Richard Forka (Silver Spring, Md./John
F. Kennedy), Scranton held off a strong push by the Green Terror
over the next seven minutes before swinging the momentum.
The Royals drew even when Salvatore used his head to redirect a
free kick by Kilty into the far corner at the 19:31 mark. Scranton
kept the pressure on for the remainder of the half, outshooting
McDaniel, 14-4, but settling for a 1-1 tie at the break.
The Royals took the lead in the 64th minute, again on a free
kick by Kilty. He lofted a ball from the right midfield area to the
far post, where sophomore midfielder Rich
Loeffler (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy)
sent a header across the goalmouth perfectly to Daley, whose header
found the back of the net.
Scranton held McDaniel at bay the remainder of the game and
finished with a 23-12 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner
kicks.
The goals by Salvatore and Daley were their first of the season,
as were the assists by Kilty and Loeffler.
In the other game of the Royals/Monarch Classic on Saturday,
King's defeated Farmingdale State, 6-1, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
In Friday's action in the Classic, Scranton defeated
Farmingdale State, 4-0, while McDaniel handed King's a 4-1
setback.
Scranton is back in action on Friday, Sept. 7, when Marietta
comes to Fitzpatrick Field for a 7 p.m. match.
