SCRANTON, Pa.—King’s College junior goalkeeper Megan
Withrow (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made life difficult for
The University of Scranton field hockey team Thursday evening at
Fitzpatrick Field.
Withrow finished with 18 saves and senior forward Callie Berryman
(Kingston, Pa./Holy Redeemer) scored twice to lead the Lady
Monarchs to a 4-1 victory.
Withrow made 10 saves in the first half alone, stopping a number
of potential scoring opportunities for Scranton, which, with the
loss, fell to 2-2 on the season. The Royals failed to convert
any of its six penalty corners in the first half and fell behind
2-0 by intermission.
King’s, now 3-2, got on the scoreboard in the 29th minute
when senior forward Meaghan Wernimont (Reeders, Pa./Pocono
Mountain) blasted in a shot just inside the arc on a ball served up
on a penalty corner by senior forward Jackie Sikora (Trenton,
NJ/Robbinsville)
Three minutes later, Sikora set up Berryman’s first
goal—an 18-yard blast that that found the upper right corner
of the cage—by delivering a ball from the right sideline.
Early in the second half, King’s extended its lead to 3-0
when junior forward Kim Howanitz (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area)
followed up her first shot attempt that was saved by Royal
sophomore goalkeeper Krista
Mundy (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) and tapped it
into the cage.
The Royals answered in the 51st minute, cutting the margin to 3-1
when freshman midfielder/back Jessica
Pankey (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) scored the
first goal of her career. She tapped in a put-back off a
previous shot attempt that was saved by Withrow.
In the 60th minute, King’s set the final score when Berryman
fought off a Royal defender and tapped in a shot in front of the
cage on a previous shot attempt that was saved by Mundy, who played
the entire second half for Scranton and finished with eight
saves.
The Royals will return to action this Saturday, September 15,
against Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, at 1:00 p.m.
