In a game twice delayed by severe weather and played in adverse
conditions at the end, The University of Scranton women's
soccer team lost a heartbreaker to 17th-ranked Ithaca College, 3-2
in double overtime, on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field in
the Joe Bochicchio Classic.
Scranton received goals from senior midfielder Sydney Parker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and
from sophomore forward Kelsey O'Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) in the defeat.
Parker's goal gave Scranton (0-2-2) the lead just 3:20
into the contest when she blasted a shot from 18 yards out into the
left corner after an assist from freshman midfielder Sarah Andrews (Mountaintop,
Pa./Crestwood). After Ithaca tied the score just before
halftime, O'Kane gave the Royals the lead in the 55th minute
when she snuck a shot into the bottom right corner after a feed
from freshman midfielder Erin
Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy
Academy).
The Royals (0-2-2) held that 2-1 lead with just under five
minutes to play, but Ithaca (3-0) tied the game with 4:49 to play
when a direct kick by junior forward Anna Gray (Bethlehem,
N.Y./Delmar) found the back of the net.
The teams each had one shot on goal in the first overtime, but
settled for a second 10-minute overtime period. The Bombers won it
with 5:35 left in the second OT on a goal by senior forward Rachael
Palladino (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) on an assist from senior
midfielder Julie Winn (Sutton, Mass./Sutton).
Scranton held a slight edge in shots, 15-14, while the Bombers
had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-2. Bombers senior goalie Becca
Salant (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) made seven sevens while
Scranton junior keeper Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria
Academy) had four saves.
The game was delayed due to lightning twice for a total of
slightly more than an hour. The first came with 2:52 to play in
regulation, and the second delay came with 6:46 remaining in the
first overtime. The final 15 minutes of regulation and most of the
overtime periods were played in steady to heavy rain.
Scranton is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Lebanon
Valley at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field in the second day of action
in the Joe Bochicchio Classic.
