POUGHKEEPSIE, NY—The University of Scranton field hockey team has suffered its share of heart-breaking losses this year.
Add another one to the list, as Vassar College pulled out a 2-1 victory in overtime, handing the Royals their fourth straight loss to fall to 12-5 on the season. All five of Scranton’s losses have been decided by one goal.
Vassar, now 11-5, set the tone defensively, limiting the Royals to just five shots and only three on goal.
Scranton, however, made the most of its limited opportunities, taking a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute of the first half on a goal by sophomore forward Krista Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy). Osborne dribbled the ball into the scoring circle and blasted a shot that found the left side of the cage for her eighth goal of the season.
Vassar tied it up in the 60th minute on a the first of two goals by senior midfielder Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) off of a penalty corner served up Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and deflected off a shot attempt by senior midfielder Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga).
In the seventh minute of the overtime period, Schroder drilled a shot that Caso was able to deflect past Scranton junior goalkeeper Maria Begliomeni (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area), who finished with two saves on the evening.
Scranton’s backline of juniors Michelle Lennon (South Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Bridget Brady (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) and sophomore Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) did its part on the defensive end, too, limiting Vassar to 11 shots and only four on goal.
The Royals played without their leading scorer, junior midfielder Alyssa Fania (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon), who suffered an injury in last Saturday’s 5-4 loss to 19th-ranked Drew University at Fitzpatrick Field.
Scranton will play its final game of the regular season this Saturday, November 2, when the Royals visit 20th-ranked Catholic University in Landmark Conference action in Washington, DC, beginning at 1:00 p.m. A win guarantees the Royals a berth in the upcoming Landmark Conference tournament, which begins with semifinal action on Wednesday, November 6, at the site of the number one and two seeds.
