SCRANTON, Pa.—Even Mother Nature couldn’t slow down
junior midfielder Kathleen Keale (Wall, NJ/Wall) of The
University of Scranton field hockey team Friday evening.
Keale scored two goals and the Royals withstood a 61-minute
weather delay to pull off a 4-1 victory over Goucher College at
Fitzpatrick Field.
Junior midfielder Alyssa
Fania (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) added a goal and
two assists and sophomore midfielder Meghan
Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) tallied
a goal as Scranton improved to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the
conference.
Goucher, now 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the Landmark, received a goal
from sophomore midfielder Antonia DiLuca (Ardmore, Pa./Friends
Central) and sophomore goalkeeper Demie Huffman (Granville,
Ohio/Granville) finished with 14 saves.
Fania set up Keale’s first goal with a picture-perfect pass
after beating several Gopher defenders down the left sideline as
Scranton jumped on top, 1-0, in the 10th minute of the first
half.
Goucher, however, tied it up moments later on a successful
conversion of a penalty corner. DiLuca delivered the ball to
the top of the circle to junior forward Justine Ruhlin (Cornish,
Maine/Sacopee Valley), who drilled a shot towards the left-hand
side of the cage that DiLuca was able to tap-in for her first goal
of the season.
The Royals dominated from this point on, taking the lead for good
when Fania converted a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute before
Keale deflected a ball off of a scramble in front of the cage just
before halftime to give Scranton a 3-1 cushion by
intermission. Fania’s goal was her team-leading seventh
of the season.
The Royals held a commanding 38-2 advantage in shots and a 17-5
margin in penalty corners.
Keale, who entered this season with one goal in her career, has
now scored four goals in her last three games.
Scranton will return to Landmark Conference action this Wednesday,
October 9, against Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania,
beginning at 4:00 p.m.
News & Notes: With four points tonight,
Fania moved into 20th place on the Royals’ all-time scoring
list with 46 total points (18 goals, 10 assists)…Junior
Maria Begliomini (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest
Area) played the entire 70 minutes in goal for Scranton to
improve to 5-0 on the season and 14-5 in her career...Scranton is
now 8-0 lifetime against Goucher.
