UPPER MONTCLAIR, NJ—Senior attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) came through with a career-high performance when
The University of Scranton’s women’s lacrosse team
needed it most.
She scored seven goals, including the game-winner in the second
overtime period, to lift the Royals to a dramatic 15-14 victory
over previously unbeaten Montclair State University Thursday
evening. She sent the game into the second overtime period
with an unassisted goal with just 24 seconds remaining in the first
extra stanza.
Scranton, which has won three straight to improve to 3-2 on the
season, also received five goals from sophomore midfielder
Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown), who
has now scored 16 of her team-high 19 goals in her last three
games. The Royals also received a goal and two assists from
senior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), a
goal and an assist from freshman midfielder Erin
Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy), and a
goal from junior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore
Regional).
Junior midfielder Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls)
led the Red Hawks, now 5-1, with four goals and sophomore Tierney
Conlon (Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) finished with two goals and four
assists.
The game was tied nine times, but the Royals led only twice in
regulation—in the 54th minute when Goss scored on a play set
up by DePaolera and when Goss scored the game’s first goal
off an assist from Allen just 62 seconds into the contest.
With just 11 seconds remaining, the Hawks tied it up on a
successful free-position shot by freshman midfielder Kasey Maguire
(Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). Schoneveld then gave Montclair its last
lead, connecting on a free-position shot in the first three-minute
segment of the first six-minute overtime period before
Giorno’s two goals wrapped it up for Scranton.
Giorno’s 7-goal performance eclipses her previous high of
five in a 17-11 victory over Elmira College on March 6, 2010, at
Fitzpatrick Field. She also moves into a tie for eighth place
on the Royals’ all-time scoring list with 138 total points
(80 goals, 58 assists).
Senior goalkeeper Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood)
finished with 12 saves for Scranton while Montclair’s Tiffani
Henderson (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) stopped nine shots.
Sullivan's goal, at the 28:57 mark of the first half, was the
100th of her career. She is now one of only eight players in
Scranton history to reach this plateau.
The Royals will return to action this Saturday, March 23,
against the Monarchs of King’s College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
at Fitzpatrick Field.
