JESSUP, Pa. – Junior right-fielder Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) has packed a potent bat for The University of
Scranton softball team this season. On Thursday evening, one swing
from McHenry gave the Royals a thrilling sweep in walk-off
fashion.
McHenry blasted a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the
seventh inning to give Scranton a 2-0 victory over Penn
State-Hazleton in the second game of a doubleheader at the Jessup
Youth Sports Complex on Thursday night. The Royals won the opener,
11-3, in five innings.
McHenry's homer was her third of the season and 10th of
her career, and capped a day during which she went 4-for-8 with a
double, homer, three RBIs and three runs scored. It also made a
winner of freshman pitcher Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock),
who tossed a complete game one-hitter with one walk and four
strikeouts.
In the opener, Scranton (10-9) overcame an early 2-0 deficit
with six runs in the second inning. Sophomore infielder Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, N.J./West
Milford) had an RBI double while sophomore outfielder
Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley
View) and McHenry each had RBI singles, and sophomore
Blaire Wilkie (Kulpsville, Pa./North
Penn) had an RBI groundout in the inning.
The Royals matched PSU-Hazleton's run in the third, then
put the game away with four in the fifth inning. Santarelli had a
three-run homer and senior Kristen Williams (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe
Woodbury) had an RBI single in the inning.
Santarelli finished the game with two hits, four RBIs and two
runs scored while Romano, McHenry, Williams and Wilkie each had two
hits. Freshman pitcher Alison Kucharski (Hampton, N.J./North
Hunterdon) struck out eight while allowing three runs on
three hits and a walk in five innings.
PSU-Hazleton (11-15) received home runs in the opener from
senior third baseman Alyssa Rodzewich (Freeland, Pa.) and junior
infielder Krystin Baker (Dingman's Ferry).
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, April 20, when it hosts
Catholic in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the
Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
