ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Senior attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) scored six goals, including a pair of key
second-half goals, to lead The University of Scranton women's
lacrosse team to a 16-12 victory over Oneonta State on Tuesday
evening at All College Field.
Giorno scored four times in the first half as the Royals (8-5)
built an 11-6 lead, but she scored back-to-back goals after the Red
Dragons (8-8) had cut the lead to 12-10 to seal the victory. She
also had an assist on a first-half goal by junior attacker
Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.J./Shore
Regional), who finished with three goals.
Scranton also received three goals apiece from senior midfielder
Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon,
N.J./Kinnelon) and sophomore midfielder Emily
Goss (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) in the win.
Freshman midfielder Erin
Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) had a
goal and an assist and freshman midfielder Fiona Keelan (Larchmont,
N.Y./Mamaroneck) had an assist.
The Royals scored four straight goals in the opening 10:05 after
Oneonta State had scored 31 seconds in to take a brief lead.
Scranton later scored four of the final five goals of the half to
lead by five at halftime. But the Red Dragons scored three straight
goals after halftime to get within 11-9 and were still within two
when Giorno scored twice to give Scranton some breathing room.
Senior goalie Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood)
made 14 saves and scooped up four ground balls for her seventh
victory of the season.
Scranton is back in action when it hosts Drew University in a
Landmark Conference matchup on Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m. at
Fitzpatrick Field, the final regular season game for the Royals.
They will open the conference playoffs on Wednesday, May 1, against
an opponent at a site and time to be determined.
