COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—The Ursinus College women’s lacrosse
team used a 9-2 run to turn an early one-goal deficit into a 15-9
victory over The University of Scranton in non-conference action
Tuesday evening.
Senior attacker Lauren GArganio (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and freshman
attacker Brynn Dietzell (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South)
combined for six goals and four assists and freshman midfielder
Devin Brakel (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro) and junior
midfielder Nicole Kovacs (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) chipped
in two goals apiece as the Bears improved to 4-7.
Senior attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks
South) and senior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) led
the Royals, now 6-4, with three goals apiece and junior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)
had a goal and an assist.
The Royals open up a 4-3 lead in the opening 12 minutes of play
behind two goals by Giorno and one apiece from sophomore midfielder
Emily
Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and DePaolera.
Ursinus then scored four straight goals to take a 7-4 halftime lead
before opening the second stanza with two more before Giorno and
DePaolera ended the scoring drought for Scranton with goals at the
39 and 44-minute marks, respectively, to cut the lead to 9-6.
The Bears ended the game on a 6-3 run to set the final score.
Ursinus held a 28-20 advantage in shots, an 18-14 margin in ground
balls, and a 15-11 edge in ground balls.
Junior goalkeeper Riley Pembroke (Great Falls, Va./Langley) stopped
10 shots for Ursinus while Scranton’s Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood)
was credited with seven saves.
The Royals will take on 10th-ranked and undefeated Susquehanna
University (11-0) in Landmark Conference action this Saturday,
April 13, in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
With three goals today, Giorno moved into seventh place on the
Royals’ all-time scoring list with 156 total points.
