SCRANTON, Pa.--The University of
Scranton field hockey team scored four times in the final eight
minutes of play to pull away for a 5-1 victory over Misericordia
University Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.
Sophomore forward Krista
Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy) scored two
goals, junior midfielder Alyssa
Fania (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) finished with a
goal and two assists, and junior midfielder Kathleen Keele (Wall, NJ/Wall) and sophomore
midfielder Meghan
Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) chipped in a
goal apiece as the Royals improved to 2-0 on the season.
Scranton, which held a 25-4 advantage in shots and an 11-8 edge in
penalty corners, also received two assists from sophomore back
Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton
Lakes) and junior Maria Begliomeni (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest
Area) made one save to pick up the victoy in goal.
Misericordia, now 0-2, took a 1-0 lead on its first shot attempt,
which came less than five minutes into the first period.
Sophomore forward Lindsay Hischak (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood)
drilled a shot from the top of the circle past Begliomeni on a ball
served from the left sideline by junior forward Hannah Harvey
(Chesapeake City, Md./Bohemia Manor). Hischak's goal was her
team-leading second of the season.
From that point on, the Royal back line of Pankey and juniors
Bridget Brady (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Mt. St.
Joseph Academy) and Michelle Lennon (South Walpole, Mass./Walpole)
kept the Cougars in check and allowed just four more shots the rest
of the way.
Scranton tied it up in the 22nd minute when Fania drilled a ball
from the right sideline that Osborne tipped past Cougar sophomore
goalkeeper Angela Pasquini (York Springs, Pa./Bermudian Springs)
for her first goal of the season.
Fania had a hand in the Royals' second goal, crossing a ball in
front of the Cougar cage in the 62nd minute that Kearney deflected
into the right side for what turned out to be the game-winner.
The Royals then added insurance goals by Osborne and Keale in the
64th and 68th minute, both of which were set up by Pankey on
penalty corner situations.
Scranton will return to action this Friday, September 5, to take
on cross-town rival Marywood University at Pacer Field beginning at
5:00 p.m.
News & Notes: The Royals have now
started a season 2-0 for the third time in the last four
years...With a goal and two assists tonight, Fania has moved into a
tie for 29th place on the Royals' all-time scoring list with 34
total points (13 goals, 8 assists)...Begliomeni is now 10-5 in her
career in goal...Scranton now leads the all-time series with
Misericordia, 32-5.
