The University of Scranton field hockey team fought off a pesky
King's College team with a pair of late goals for a 2-0 victory at
Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Royals (9-2) received goals from junior defender Jessica
Pankey (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) and junior
forward Lara Haab (Gladwyne,
Pa./Country Day School Sacred Heart) to remain undefeated
at home in five matches this season.
The game was scoreless at halftime despite Scranton holding a
commanding 14-6 edge in shots. The Royals had to good chances
early, but King's senior defender Kristi Katra
(Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) had a pair of
defensive saves in the first 14:01 of the game.
Pankey broke the scoreless drought with 13:32 to play in the
second half when she took a pass just outside the circle from
freshman midfielder Jessica
Kaplowitz (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and
dribbled to a yard inside the circle where she let a shot go that
snuck through the defense and found the left side of the cage.
Just less than 10 minutes later, Haab gave the Royals an
insurance goal when redirected a cross by junior midfielder
Meghan Kearney
(Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) into the goal with a
little less than four minutes to play.
Pankey's goal was her first of the season and fifth of her
career, while Haab scored her second goal as a Royal after
transferring to Scranton this fall. Kaplowitz's assist was the
first of her career while Kearney picked up her fourth assist of
her career, all this season.
Scranton finished with a 20-7 edge in shots over the Monarchs
(6-6), and held a 17-5 advantage in penalty corners.
The victory was the 99th of head coach Colleen Moyer's career.
The Royals will attempt to give her win no. 100 when they return to
action on Saturday, Oct. 11, against Goucher at 1 p.m. in Towson,
Md.
