WASHINGTON, DC—The University of Scranton field hockey
team’s 2014 season came to an end Wednesday evening with a
3-0 loss to 7th-ranked Catholic University in the semifinals of the
Landmark Conference tournament.
It marks the third time in the league’s eight-year history
that the Cardinals have spoiled the Royals’ championship
hopes.
Junior forward Hayley Wright (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph’s)
led Catholic, now 15-2, with a goal and an assist and senior
forward Kim Herman (Havertown, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) and
freshman back Marisa Martinelli (Eagleville, Pa./Merion Mercy
Academy) tallied a goal apiece.
The Cardinals, who held a 12-7 advantage in shots, scored twice
within a three-minute span midway through the first half to build
up a 2-0 halftime lead.
Defensively, Royal senior goalkeeper Krista
Mundy (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) made three
saves and got plenty of help from senior back Michelle Lennon (South Walpole,
Mass./Walpole) and junior midfielder Meghan Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal
O’Hara), each of whom came up with a defensive
save to stop two other Cardinal scoring opportunities.
With tonight’s loss, the Royals finish the year with a 13-6
record. The senior class of Alyssa Fania
(Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon),
Maureen Taylor (Sayville,
NY/Sayville), Kathleen Keale (Wall, NJ/Wall),
Adrianna Napoletano (Scarsdale,
NY/Edgemont), Cassie
Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria
Academy), Bridget
Brady (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph
Academy), Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton
Lakes), Lennon and Mundy led Scranton to 50 victories
over the past four years and four Landmark Conference tournament
berths, including an appearance in the championship game in
2013.
Several of the above seniors left their marks on the Royal record
book. Fania is the program’s all-time leader in assists
(22), is fourth in total points (104) and tied for fourth in goals
(41), while Mullen is tied for 16th in goals (22) and 17th in total
points (55). Keale finished with 12 goals and four assists
for 28 total points, which is tied for 38th place on the
Royals’ all-time list, while Mundy is second in shutouts (15)
and seventh in saves (184).
