WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Pa.—The University of Scranton
women’s lacrosse team took out some frustration Saturday
afternoon.
With their first two games cancelled due to inclement weather, the
Royals finally got on a chance to open their 2014 season today and
responded with a 17-2 victory over King’s College at Betzler
Field.
Junior midfielder Emily
Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) scored four of her
game-high five goals in the first half as the Royals bolted out to
an 11-1 halftime lead. Late in the second half, she reached a
personal milestone when she scored the 100th goal of her career,
becoming one of 11 players in Royals’ history to accomplish
this feat.
Scranton, 1-0, also received three goals from senior Erin Green (Merrick, NY/Sandford Calhoun), two
goals and an assist from senior Christine Dredger (Glen Head, NY/Our Lady of Mercy
Academy), two goals from freshman Nikole Sullivan (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) and
senior Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NY/Shore Regional),
a goal and three assists apiece from sophomore Erin
Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and
senior Shannon Ginty (Mineola, NY/Sacred Heart
Academy), and a goal from freshman Meghan Kerr
(Warwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic).
Seniors Jessica Ormrod (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) and Amanda
Harney (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) scored a goal apiece for
King’s, 0-1. Freshman Alex Friedhoff (Lackawaxen,
Pa./Wallenpaupack) made a game-high 17 saves in goal for the Lady
Monarchs.
The Royals held a 29-8 advantage in shots and a 19-13 margin in
ground balls.
Junior Emily
Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington) played nearly 43
minutes in goal for the Royals and picked up the victory by making
one save. Freshmen Marne Rosetti (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and
Grace Campbell (Catonsville,
Md./Catonsville) also saw action in goal for Scranton
today.
In today’s game, Goss also moved into the top 15 all-time in
scoring with 108 total points (100 goals, eight assists).
