KINGS POINT, NY—The University of Scranton women’s
lacrosse team took care of business early in today’s Landmark
Conference regular-season finale against the Merchant Marine
Academy.
Needing a win to lock up a conference postseason tournament, the
Royals wasted little time, building up a 15-1 halftime lead en
route to a 19-4 victory.
Senior Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional)
and junior Emily
Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) scored four goals
apiece and senior Erin
Green (Merrick, NY/Sandford Calhoun) finished with
three goals and an assist as Scranton improved to 6-8 overall and
3-3 in the Landmark Conference.
The Royals are now the number four seed and will meet top-seeded
Catholic University in Washington, DC, in one of two semifinal
games this Wednesday, April 30. Drew University will visit
defending champion Susquehanna University in the other matchup,
with the winners advancing to next Saturday’s championship
game. The eventual champion receives an automatic bid to the
NCAA Division III championships.
Scranton, which held a 34-16 advantage in shots and a 16-8 margin
in ground balls, also received two goals and four assists from
freshman Meghan
Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic), two goals
and two assists from senior Christine Dredger (Glen Head, NY/Our Lady of Mercy
Academy), two goals from freshman Alyssa Farrell (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), and a
goal apiece from freshman Alexandra Alessi (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown
Area) and senior Shannon Ginty (Mineola, NY/Sacred Heart
Academy).
Senior Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ/The Peddie School) paced
the Mariners, now 1-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference, with two
goals, senior Katie Noonan (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle)
had a goal and an assist, and Emily Finnin (Littleton,
Colo./Lakewood )scored a goal.
With four goals today, Sullivan moved into fourth place on the
Royals’ all-time list with 153. She is also fifth in
total points with 181.
Scranton will be making its fourth straight and fifth appearance in
the seven-year history of the Landmark Conference.
