SCRANTON, Pa.—Franklin & Marshall College scored three
times in the final seven minutes of play to pull away for a 13-7
victory over The University of Scranton in non-conference
men’s lacrosse action Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick
Field.
Junior midfielder Chad Gamble (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and
senior midfielder Jamie McCulloch (Ossining, NY/Ossining) scored
three goals apiece and senior attacker Billy Kempner (Seaford,
NY/Seaford) finished with two goals and two assists as the
Diplomats improved to 9-3.
Scranton, which had a 3-game winning streak snapped to fall to
8-5, was led by sophomore forward Alec
Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) with five goals and
senior attacker Gus
Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and freshman attacker Ryan
Mygatt (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) chipped
in one apiece.
F&M held the Royals to two goals in the first half and led
10-5 with 12:56 remaining before Mikrut scored back-to-back goals
within a 38-second span to make things interesting.
The Diplomats, however, controlled the action from that point
forward, beginning with an unassisted goal by junior attacker Will
Ballantyne (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) with 7:01 left and ending
with goals by sophomore midfielder Tommy Wenk (Manhasset,
NY/Manhasset) and McCulloch with 2:57 and 2:15 remaining,
respectively.
F&M out-shot the Royals, 40-32, and held a 29-22 advantage in
ground balls, but the Diplomats kept Scranton in the game by
committing eight penalties, two of which the Royals converted into
goals.
Senior goalkeeper Cameron Setian (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham
Academy) finished with 11 saves for F&M while Scranton’s
Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, NJ/West
Morris) was credited with 10.
Mikrut’s five goals tonight were the most by a Scranton
player this year and the most by a Royal since Dillon McInerney
scored six against Farmingdale St. on February 23, 2013.
The Royals will close out a four-game home stand this Saturday,
April 12, against the Merchant Marine Academy beginning at 1:00
p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
