DALLAS, Pa.—The University of Scranton field hockey team
extended one streak but had another one broken Tuesday evening
against Misericordia University at Anderson Field.
The Royals won their sixth straight game, 2-1, but their
consecutive streak of not allowing a goal was snapped at 445
minutes when Misericordia senior midfielder Emily Hegner
(Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) deflected in a shot on a
penalty corner in the 58th minute of the second half. Prior to
Hegner’s goal, Scranton hadn’t allowed a goal since the
34-minute mark of the first half of last year’s Landmark
Conference championship game against Catholic University in
Washington, DC.
Nevertheless, Scranton is now 6-0 for the second straight season
and can set a new record for best start in school history with a
win Saturday at Arcadia.
Junior midfielder Meghan
Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara)
scored her first goal of the season in the 16th minute on a
scramble following a penalty corner and senior Alyssa
Fania (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) converted a
penalty stroke early in the second half for the Royals, who held an
18-8 advantage in shots.
The Cougars, now 3-3, nearly got on the scoreboard first, but Royal
senior midfielder Kathleen Keale (Wall, NJ/Wall) came up
with a defensive save to end the scoring threat. Scranton
senior goalkeeper Krista
Mundy (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) finished
with four saves to pick up her sixth win of the season and the 23rd
of her career.
Fania’s goal was her eighth of the season and the 31st of her
career and moves into a tie for fifth-place with Ronnie Pratt (31
goals, 1979-1980) on the Royals’ all-time list.
