Senior midfielder Alyssa Fania (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) continued her strong play with two goals and an assist to lead The University of Scranton field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals (7-1, 1-0 Landmark) also received goals from senior forward Cassie Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and junior forwards Krista Osborne (Blue Bell, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) and Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley). Osborne and Mullen also had assists in the victory.
Scranton jumped ahead right away when Mullen tipped in a shot by Osborne just 4:11 into the game for her third goal of the season while Osborne picked up her second assist.
The Royals carried a 1-0 lead into halftime despite holding a commanding 12-4 advantage in shots in the opening 35 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made a pair of first-half saves while posting her fourth shutout of the season and 13th of her career.
The second half was more of the same, except more scoring for the Royals, who put the game away with three goals in the first 11 minutes. Whitman scored on a cross by Mullen in the 36th minute, Fania scored in the 40th minute and Osborne tipped in a pass by Fania off a penalty corner in the 46th minute for a 4-0 lead. Fania capped the scoring with a goal in the 48th minute.
Fania now has 12 goals, matching her career high from last season, and four assists. She has 34 career goals, sixth most in school history, and 17 career assists, tied for third most in school history. Her 85 career points are also sixth in Royals history.
Osborne now has a career-high 11 goals, giving her 20 for her career. Whitman's goal was her sixth of the season and 20th of her career.
Scranton finished the game with a 28-4 edge in shots over Susquehanna (5-6, 0-1). The Royals also had a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Royals return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes at 4 p.m.
