ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Seniors Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and Lia DiSciascio (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) combined for 32 points and 16 rebounds as the sixth-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Landmark Conference play with a 58-46 victory over Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon in Thompson Gymnasium.
Mesaris had 20 points and nine rebounds, and DiSciascio had 12 points on four 3-pointers while pulling down seven rebounds. Scranton (11-1, 3-0 Landmark) made eight of 19 (42.1 percent) from 3-point range, the team's third straight game hitting at least 40 percent from 3-point range and seventh in 12 games this season.
The Lady Royals took a 28-17 halftime lead by holding Elizabethtown (8-1, 2-1 Landmark) to just 8-for-30 (26.7 percent) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Mesaris had 12 points and senior guard Lindsay Fluehr (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) had five points and three assists in the opening 20 minutes.
Scranton scored the first two points of the second half, but the Blue Jays responded with a 13-3 run to pull within 33-30 a little more than five minutes into the half. DiSciascio responded with a 3-pointer to spark a 9-1 run that put Scranton ahead by 11 with 12:28 left, and Elizabethtown got no closer than six the rest of the way.
Junior guard Noelle Alieca (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) finished with seven points, two rebounds and two steals, and Fluehr had five points, five assists and five rebounds in the win. Sophomore forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) added four points, nine rebounds, five assists, four blocks and a steal.
The Lady Royals finished the game going 19-for-50 (38 percent) from the field and 12 of 18 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line. They dominated the rebounding battle, 42-32, and committed 16 turnovers.
Elizabethtown finished the game 20-for-58 (34.5 percent) from the field, including 2-for-7 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range. The Blue Jays made four of 10 free throws and committed 14 turnovers. Senior forward Taylor Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) led the Blue Jays with 13 points and sophomore center Emily Martin (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) added 11.
Scranton is back in action on Tuesday when the Lady Royals travel to Madison, N.J. to take on Drew University in a Landmark Conference game at 7 p.m.
