HUNTINGDON, Pa. - After falling behind early by a goal, the University of Scranton men's soccer team stormed back in the second period, scoring three goals to race past host Juniata, 3-1, in Landmark Conference play on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Royals improved to 5-3-1 on the year, and collected their first win in Landmark Conference play for the year to go to 1-0-1 in conference play. Juniata fell to 2-7-1 and 0-3 in conference play with the defeat.
In the first half, Juniata was quick to strike, scoring a goal four minutes into the contest to take a fast 1-0 lead on the Royals. Offensively, Scranton could not catch a break in the first half, and failed to score a goal despite the fact that they fired eight total shots in the period.
The bad luck offensively for Scranton did not last, as for the final 45 minutes of action, they dominated play.
The scoring surge for Scranton began in the 50th minute, as junior Tim DiBisceglie (Mine Hill, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) scored his third goal in as many matches to tie it up at 1-1. Fellow junior Michael Bergen (Newtown, Pa./Pennington School) was credited with an assist on the play, marking the second straight match he assisted a DiBisceglie goal.
In the 68th minute, Scranton finally took the lead in the match, as junior Henry Bonilla (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennington School) scored the eventual game-winner off an assist from freshman Matt Williams (Westfield, N.J./Westfield).
For Bonilla, it was his second game-winner of the year, while Williams got on the scoring sheet for the first time in his career at Scranton with the assist.
The capper for Scranton came in the 78th minute, as sophomore Gavin Coutts (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) scored off an assist from sophomore A.J. Nardone (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) to give Scranton an insurmountable two-goal edge.
For Coutts, it was his first goal of the year, while Nardone recorded his first assist of the year on the play.
Overall, Scranton held a decisive 20-8 advantage on shots in the match, along with an 8-2 edge on corner kicks.
On defense, junior goalie Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn,/South Windsor) and the rest of the Royals back line kept Juniata off the scoreboard for almost 86 minutes after allowing the early goal, as the Eagles had just two shots on net in the match.
The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Drew for another Landmark Conference tilt. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
