ONEONTA, NY—The University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team had a two-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon, dropping a 17-7 decision to Oneonta St.
Senior attacker Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) scored six goals and freshman attacker Taylor Casey (Garden City South, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) added five as the Red Dragons snapped a three-game losing skid to improve to 1-3 on the season.
Oneonta St. also received three goals and two assists from junior attacker Catherine Clark (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) and a goal apiece from senior midfielder Nikki Fioretti (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), freshman attacker Jaime Morris (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) and sophomore attacker Katie Flannery (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge).
The Royals, now 2-3, were led by senior midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) and sophomore midfielder Meghan Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) with two goals apiece and junior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes Academy) and freshmen Brianna Maglio (Garden City, NY/Garden City Senior) andDana Siepietowski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored a goal apiece.
Scranton did manage to open up an early 4-3 lead before the Red Dragons scored 10 straight goals—including three each by Donodeo and Casey—to take a 13-4 lead with 19:29 remaining in the second half. Scranton did manage to close the gap to 13-7 on goals by Kerr, Goss, and Maglio, but Oneonta St. regained the momentum for good by scoring four times in the final seven minutes of play to set the final score.
Oneonta St. held a 36-17 advantage in shots, a 24-14 margin in ground balls, and converted 4 of 9 free-position shots for goals. The Royals also hurt their chances for victory by committing 32 turnovers, including 17 in the second half.
Royal senior goalkeeper Emily Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington) finished with a game-high 11 saves while her counterpart, Red Dragon freshman Autumn Moore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), stopped five shots.
With two goals today, Goss moves into a tie for 10th place on the Royals’ all-time scoring list with 153 total points (142 goals, 11 assists).
Scranton will open a two-game Spring Break tripthis Monday, March 16, against Redlands University in Redlands, Calif., beginning at 7:00 p.m.
