JESSUP, Pa.—The University of Scranton softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Penn St.-Hazleton Thursday evening at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex behind two solid pitching efforts from freshman Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) and junior Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock).
Rentzheimer struck out six batters and allowed only one hit over five innings to lead the Royals to an 8-2 victory in the opener, while Hampsey struck out eight and gave up only two hits as Scranton took the nightcap, 6-0.
Sophomore Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) paced the Royals 9-hit attack in the first game with three hits, including two doubles, and sophomore Marisa Ciriello (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) drove in two runs to ignite a 3-run rally in the third inning to give Scranton a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) also belted a double for the Royals.
Penn St.-Hazleton got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when sophomore Andrea Quillman (Bernville, Pa.) belted her team-leading eighth home run, a two-run shot.
DeSarro drove in a pair of runs and freshman Kaitlyn Pittsman (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) finished with two hits for Scranton, which took advantage of six Lion errors to score all of its runs unearned.
Rentzheimer is now 7-4 on the season while Hampsey has yet to lose and is 5-0.
The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action this Saturday, April 18, against co-leader Susquehanna University at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, Scranton faces the other Landmark Conference co-leader, Moravian College, in Bethlehem, starting at 1:00 p.m.
