MADISON, NJ—Sophomore attackman Jake Haimson (Montville, NJ/Montville) scored a season-high five goals and junior midfielder Josh Kasman (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) added three to lead The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team to its third straight win, a 13-4 victory over Drew University in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Scranton also received two goals from senior midfielder Will Mahle (Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery), a goal and three assists from senior attackman Anthony Lombardo (Mendham, NJ/Mendham), a goal and two assists from junior midfielder Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Preparatory), and a goal from sophomore midfielder William Joyce (Bethesda, Md./St. John’s College High School) to improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Drew, 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the Landmark, received two goals and an assist from Tom Cotroneo (Clifton, NJ/Clifton), a goal and an assist from Michael Lloyd (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge), and a goal from Devin Lyons (Hackettstown, NJ/North Warren).
The Royals took control early, as Kasman and Haimson scored two goals apiece as Scranton bolted out to a 5-0 lead in the first period. The Rangers did manage to cut the lead to four late in the third period before Elkin keyed a 5-0 run with an unassisted goal and Haimson opened the final stanza with his 19th goal of the year on a play set up by sophomore midfielder Nick Mullery (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson).
Scranton out-shot the Rangers, 35-26, won 12 of 18 face-offs—including 7 of 13 by senior Matt Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South)—and pressured Drew into turning the ball over 20 times, including 12 in the first half to open up a 6-1 halftime lead.
Junior Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) made 10 saves in goal for Scranton, which was the third time this season he has made at least 10, while Teddy Sweeney (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) finished with 14 for Drew.
Scranton, which returns to action Tuesday, April 7, against Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, beginning at 4:00 p.m., has scored 43 goals during this three-game winning streak.
Haimson’s previous season-high was a 3-goal effort at Farmingdale St. on February 21 and against Washington & Jefferson last Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
